Artist Statement:
Janessa combines faith and culture by making complex scenarios combining the physical world and the spiritual world. Seeing and capturing the beauty of God's creation helps Janessa to be able to see the photographic vision that is in the world around us. She includes narratives of faith, Biblical context, etymology (the study of words), and natural elements such as water, nature, and light in order to provide a contextual perspective of the supernatural world. Janessa is gravitated towards visionary concepts because capturing pictures is what makes one a photographer, but capturing vision is what makes one an artist.

This photography project, Green Trees, emphasizes growth and stance as a Black Woman. The growth of the hair of a black woman grows up, reflecting trees that grow up. This is a statement that encourages black women to love the beauty of their hair and its intricate curls. The afros are meant to blend into the trees, showcasing the similarities between the growth of trees and growth of afro hair.
