Artist Statement:
Basil (they/them) is a 19-year-old photographer based in Chicago, Illinois. They started their photography journey after buying their first camera in 2018. Throughout the past few years, Basil has explored many different types of photography styles and continues to do so through their college courses. Basil has mainly focused on street and wildlife photography as they have traveled around the country. Their main goal with photography is to capture the life that takes place everywhere they go, and to celebrate the experience of life.
This body of work that I created sprouted from the want to explore my own identity within the LGBTQ+ community. The concept started off as taking photos that represent the meaning behind the colors of the rainbow flag. As I continued to work on this project, I talked to my peers within the community about how these different meanings of each color presented themselves within their lives. I did my best to not only encapsulate my own experience but also the many different experiences of others within the LGBTQ+ community. This project helped me to explore my identity as a lesbian and how that has played a role within my life, as well as grow closer to my peers and their individual experiences.
