Artist Statement:

Ana Lara is an artist born and raised in Mexico City who moved to the U.S. in 2016. Due to the fast-paced nature of her life, Ana likes to focus her work on the simple aspects of life, such as slice-of-life moments, meaningful objects, and architecture. Most recently, she has interwoven her Mexican culture and European ancestry with the significance of advancing social change, resulting in the themes of her work slowly shifting into advocating for women’s rights in Latin America, fighting against gender-based violence, and drawing attention to the effects of colonialism in contemporary culture. In her free time, Ana likes to read, go to the gym, and collect records.

These works reflect my anger toward the way society treats women. Only recently have I realized how much anger I've overlooked over the years, so I wanted to create scenes that reflect feminine rage. I've also realized creating something so striking encourages a strong reaction, both positive and negative. I decided to focus on texture, which is why I wanted these images to be black and white, but it was important for me to include red because it represents how women constantly feel attacked and affected by the way others treat us.
