Artist Statement:
Gretchen is a multi-media artist from Chicago. She is enrolled in Columbia College's Film program, but her artwork expands beyond just that. Gretchen works with primarily acrylic paints, creating dreamlike portraits of girlhood, but she has had ample experience, in sculpting, animating, and with 3D stop-motion. Gretchen’s artwork typically follows themes centering around girlhood, dreams, and nostalgia. She began her creative journey as a painter and a storyteller.

My art illustrates the delicate journey of girlhood to womanhood. The pieces that make up this journey stay with me through a collection of moments and dreams- whether it be the pattern of my favorite quilt, the warmth of the sun on the grass, or the slow way my grandma tells a story. I try to expand upon these small moments in my art- allowing the viewer a glimpse into girlhood and how it has shaped my perception of the world. Within all of my creative ventures, I seek a final product which in its viewing, a communal understanding can be achieved. I strive for the ability to reach and connect to other people’s experiences and stories through my own. In the past few years, my work has been focused on dreams-the fragments of nostalgia and reality that we carry with us through our subconscious.
