Artist Statement:
Saja Stormer is a multimedia visual artist and a BA Fine Arts and Art History student at Columbia College Chicago, graduating in the Spring of 2025. In her work, Saja explores the physicality of objects and their assumed purpose in life. She counters this through their manipulation, drawing attention to the dual and absurd nature of existence. Saja is inspired by mundane, abnormal, and fantastical experiences and expresses this through symbols of nature, religion, abstract linework, and household objects. Saja focuses on her mixed media work's materiality and symbolic essence to create visual harmony and thematic importance.
I use visual symbols to explore and understand the perpetual sense of absurdity in existence on Earth. Drawing from music and poetry of different kinds, I put my perceptions into an ocular, physical state, focusing on specific patterns in life I find to be the most dual. These patterns focus on addiction, vulnerability, memory or lack thereof, sacrifice, punishment, trauma, life, death, and faith. When I explore these concepts, I depend on my limited awareness and memories as an attempt to capture an intricate principle that dominates my consciousness.
