About the Publications:
Issue No. 2 of MASKS Literary Magazine, sponsored by the Columbia Library's Aesthetics of Research, was submitted to (and won) Columbia's 2022 Weisman Award. Columbia poets and writers included in this issue are Sarah (Qiuqi) Bovold, Emilie Plunkett, Sean Swogger, and Muchen Wang. This is in addition to an international pool of contributors from Iran, Italy, Canada, and China. MASKS' entire editorial staff consists of Columbia MFA candidates.
The Featured Artist of this issue is Japanese-Canadian artist Miya Turnbull, a mask-maker and video/projection artist who works predominantly with self portraits as a way to explore and examine identity, persona, and self-image. She has exhibited internationally and currently lives in Mi'kma'ki (Nova Scotia).
Issue No. 3 of MASKS Literary Magazine is the recipient of Columbia's 2022 Weisman Award. Columbia poets and writers included in this issue are Siera Carpenter, Arniecea Johnson, Kimberly Rosa, and Tyler Odeneal. The entire editorial staff consists of Columbia MFA candidates, including Eileen Lannan Poetry Prize winners Nisha Atalie and Noah Zanella, and Hypertext Short Story Award-winner Trevor (C.T.) Lisa. This is in addition to an international pool of contributors from Nigeria, India, Italy, Canada, Poland, the UK, and Brazil.
The Featured Artist of this issue is Melissa Meier, a mask-maker and fashion designer who uses natural materials like leaves, stones, eggshells, rice, and pinecones to create kinetic sculptures of warrior women—exemplifying strength, beauty, and harmony with the elements.
This issue's featured interview is Columbia MFA alum Kate Wisel, the author of the linked story collection "Driving in Cars with Homeless Men," which won the 2019 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Wisel is now adapting the collection for a miniseries with Bad Wolf and Pearl Street Productions.
Issue No. 4 of MASKS Literary Magazine is a recipient of Columbia's 2023 Weisman Award. Columbia editors and contributors in this issue include Madeline McConico, Bernie Groves, Des Salazar, CJ Okafor, Trevor Lisa, and Noah Zanella. This is in addition to an international pool of contributors from Canada, India, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the UK, and the US.
The Featured Artist of this issue is surrealist photographer Natalie Arriola; other spotlighted artists include New Orleans painter and carpenter Wade L. Griffin, and Meesha Goldberg and her "Daughterland" series about the Korean diaspora.
