Project Description
Drawn in 2025, these spot illustrations on the theme of “Red Peppers” were published by The New Yorker in the May 4. 2026 issue. Some appeared in the print magazine, while some appeared only online. All were modified digitally by the artist, but these India ink drawings on Bristol Board are the originally submitted versions, before any digital modifications. They are numbered here according to the original sequence, which was also was modified in the print version.


About the Artist
Ivan Brunetti lives and works in Chicago as a teacher, editor, illustrator, and cartoonist, not always in in that order. He is the author of Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice and Aesthetics: A Memoir, as well as the editor of both volumes of An Anthology of of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories (all from Yale University Press). His drawings occasionally appear in the New Yorker, among other publications. His most recent books are Wordplay, 3X4, and Comics: Easy as ABC, Shapes and Shapes, and the upcoming This Makes That (all from Toon Books).
