Artist Statement:
LAS FROGAS’ (Mariana Arceo) practice is documentation and a personal dive of her experience of being on the internet at an early age. Her body of work encompasses the mental effects of seeking community online and being unknowingly groomed by it as a child. Aside from her own personal experience, LAS FROGAS’ interest in this topic roots from understanding how easily children can encounter toxic online environments and be influenced by the people who establish those spaces. LAS FROGAS’ recent fascination with the relationship between a person and a screen is a concept that revolves around the idea of one’s identity being reduced merely to a character. The comfort of hiding behind a screen and the ability to create a personality non-reflective of oneself is an ability granted by the internet, and it is oftentimes abused to manipulate people. LAS FROGAS aims to combine both the trauma and fond memories she has accumulated from being present online in the early 2000’s and how they have affected her as she has grown into adulthood.
